The Watch Glossary: Essential Terms Every Watch Enthusiast Should Know
Entering the world of watches can sometimes feel like learning a new language.
Chronograph, automatic, skeleton, sapphire, ATM — these terms appear everywhere, but what do they actually mean?
Whether you are buying your first watch or building your collection, here are some essential watch terms worth knowing.
Section 1: Understanding Watch Anatomy
Case
The main body of the watch that protects the movement inside. Cases can come in many shapes, sizes, and materials, from classic round stainless steel to more unconventional designs.
Dial
The face of the watch, where you find the hands, hour markers, sub-dials, date windows, and other displays.
Crown
The small control used to adjust the time and, depending on the watch, other functions such as the date or an inner rotating bezel.
Bezel
The ring surrounding the dial. Some bezels are purely decorative, while others rotate or display scales for additional functions.
Pushers
Buttons positioned on the watch case, most commonly found on chronographs. They are typically used to start, stop, and reset the stopwatch function.
Section 2: Know Your Movements
Quartz Movement
A battery-powered movement regulated by a quartz crystal. Quartz watches are known for accuracy, reliability, and minimal maintenance.
Automatic Movement
A mechanical movement that uses the motion of your wrist to wind the mainspring. Unlike a quartz watch, it does not rely on a traditional battery to keep running.
At Richurus, the Bullhead Automatic combines an automatic mechanical movement with a skeletonized dial, allowing you to see part of the mechanism at work.
Section 3: Functions & Watch Design
Chronograph
A stopwatch function built into a wristwatch. Chronographs usually use additional hands or sub-dials to measure elapsed seconds and minutes.
It is one of the defining features of the Richurus Bullhead Chronograph collection.
Sub-Dial
A smaller dial located inside the main watch dial. Depending on the watch, it can display chronograph timing, seconds, 24-hour time, or other information.
Dual Time
A function that allows the wearer to reference two different time zones. It can be especially useful for frequent travelers or anyone keeping track of time elsewhere in the world.
Skeleton Dial
A dial designed to reveal parts of the mechanical movement underneath. Instead of hiding the mechanics, skeleton watches make them part of the visual design.
Bullhead
A distinctive chronograph layout where the crown and chronograph controls are positioned toward the top of the case rather than the traditional 3 o'clock position.
The design became closely associated with racing chronographs and gives the watch its recognizable “bullhead” silhouette.
Section 4: Materials & Specifications
Sapphire Crystal
A highly scratch-resistant material used to protect the watch dial. It is commonly found on watches designed for greater durability and long-term clarity.
316L Stainless Steel
A widely used stainless-steel alloy in watchmaking, valued for its strength, corrosion resistance, and polished appearance.
Super-LumiNova®
A photoluminescent material that absorbs light and releases it gradually in darkness.
Richurus uses Super-LumiNova® in the LumiX collection, giving the watch a distinctive appearance in low-light conditions.
Water Resistance / ATM
ATM indicates a watch's tested level of water resistance. For example, 5 ATM and 10 ATM represent different pressure-resistance ratings.
Always check the specifications of your individual watch before exposing it to water.
Speak the Language of Watches
Understanding watch terminology makes choosing a timepiece much easier.
More importantly, it helps you appreciate the details behind the design — from the movement hidden inside the case to the chronograph pushers, luminous materials, crystals, and mechanical components you see on the wrist.
And you do not need to learn everything at once.
Every new watch introduces another part of the story.
