Understanding Different Watch Lume Technologies

Not all watch lume works the same way.

When customers compare lume performance, confusion often comes from mixing two very different luminous technologies:
Tritium and Super-LumiNova®.

Understanding the difference helps set the right expectations — and explains why your watch may behave exactly as designed.


1. Two Completely Different Technologies

Super-LumiNova® (Used on LUMIX)

Super-LumiNova® is a photoluminescent material.
It works by absorbing light and then releasing it gradually in the dark.

Key characteristics:

  • Requires light exposure to activate

  • Bright immediately after charging

  • Gradually fades over time

  • Does not emit light on its own

  • Non-radioactive and widely used by Swiss watch brands

This is the lume used on the LUMIX series (BGW9 blue).


Tritium

Tritium is a radioactive gas-based light source, sealed inside tiny glass tubes.

Key characteristics:

  • Self-illuminating (no charging needed)

  • Glows continuously, day and night

  • Lower initial brightness than charged Super-LumiNova

  • Gradually weakens over years due to radioactive decay

  • Subject to stricter regulations and higher production cost

Tritium is commonly used on military or tactical watches designed for constant visibility.


2. Which One Is Brighter?

The answer depends on when you look at it.

  • Immediately after charging
    → Super-LumiNova is noticeably brighter

  • Many hours later, without recharging
    → Tritium remains visible, while Super-LumiNova fades

This difference often leads to misunderstandings when customers expect lume to stay bright all night without light exposure.


3. Why Super-LumiNova Fades — and Why That’s Normal

Super-LumiNova works by storing energy from light.

That means:

  • Brightness is highest right after charging

  • The glow fades as stored energy is released

  • This behavior is intentional and unavoidable

  • It does not indicate poor quality or wear

Even high-end Swiss watches behave the same way.


4. Why We Chose Super-LumiNova for LUMIX

5. How to Get the Best Lume Performance

To experience the lume as intended:

  1. Expose the dial to strong light
    (sunlight or a bright lamp)

  2. Charge for 20–30 minutes

  3. Move the watch into a dark environment

Under proper charging:

  • The lume will be clearly visible for 3–4 hours

  • A softer glow may remain longer in complete darkness


Final Thoughts

If you’re looking for continuous, always-on illumination, tritium may be the right technology.
If you prefer brighter initial glow, modern materials, and non-radioactive construction, Super-LumiNova® is the industry standard.

Different lume technologies serve different purposes — and understanding the difference helps you choose the right watch for your needs.
